چکیده

The shelf areas around the Antarctic Continent are locations of dense water formation; part of these water masses ventilate the adjacent deep ocean basins and enter the global thermohaline circulation. This paper takes a look at regional differences of shelf sea–deep ocean exchange in high southern latitudes (mainly between the Weddell and Ross Seas), highlights a few physical mechanisms potentially causing these differences (the influence of ice shelves, density driven flows, effects of topography, and tidal mixing effects) and points out the need for and possible ways of their parameterization in coarse resolution climate models.

Connecting Antarctic Cross-Slope Exchange with Southern Ocean Overturning

Previous idealized investigations of Southern Ocean overturning have omitted its connection with the Antarctic continental shelves, leaving the influence of shelf processes on Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) export unconsidered. In particular, the contribution of mesoscale eddies to setting the stratification and overturning circulation in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is well establish...

Eddy generation and jet formation via dense water outflows across the Antarctic continental slope

Along various stretches of the Antarctic margins, dense Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) escapes its formation sites and descends the continental slope. This export necessarily raises the isopycnals associated with lighter density classes over the continental slope, resulting in density surfaces that connect the near-freezing waters of the continental shelf to the much warmer CDW at mid-depth offs...

Eddy-mediated transport of warm Circumpolar DeepWater across the Antarctic Shelf Break

The Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) modulates ventilation of the abyssal ocean via the export of dense Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) and constrains shoreward transport of warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) toward marine-terminating glaciers. Along certain stretches of the continental shelf, particularly where AABW is exported, density surfaces connect the shelf waters to the middepth Circumpolar Dee...

Leg 178 Antarctic Peninsula

Leg 178 will drill eight sites off the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula to provide a highresolution record of Antarctic continental climate over the past 6-10 m.y. and a direct check on the presumed glacio-eustatic origin of global sea-level change over the same period. Moreover, it is an essential preliminary to the more difficult task of extracting the complete Cenozoic record of Ant...

Ocean processes at the Antarctic continental slope

The Antarctic continental shelves and slopes occupy relatively small areas, but, nevertheless, are important for global climate, biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Processes of water mass transformation through sea ice formation/melting and ocean-atmosphere interaction are key to the formation of deep and bottom waters as well as determining the heat flux beneath ice shelves. Cli...
